Fiberglass Filters: The most commonly used filter is woven fiberglass. Most people buy them because they are the least expensive. However, they do very little to block small to extremely small organic or carbon-based particles.
Poly-Cotton Pleated Filters: Pleated filters are folded to condense more of the filter into less space, making the filter denser. This prevents smaller particles from passing creating better filteration than fiberglass. However, due to its material and density, airflow is also more restricted, making it less energy  efficient.
Electrostatic Filters: Electrostatic filters have layers of plastic mesh which allow air to pass causing static electricity. Organic and carbon-based particles are electrically charged and driven into the plastic mesh layers. Electrostatic filters provide effective filtration, but are even more restrictive on airflow volume and far less energy efficient.
Not All Filters Are Equal
Electronic Filters : These are like electronic filters, but much more effective all around. Using minimal electricity it super charges stainless steel wires within the filter. Particles passing through the ionizing high voltage wires become electrically charged. The now positively charged particles are drawn into the negatively charged aluminum grid collecting the particles. The downsides to these filters are they often cause soiling problems, they become less efficient with use, they often require frequent cleaning, they can produce ozone causing an unhealthy atmosphere and are relatively expensive. However, they generally are energy efficient because of the low drop in airflow pressure.
UV Pro-Clean Air Filters Out Performs Them All
UV Pro-Clean Air Filters contain a high-intensity blue cold lamp that illuminates specific levels of ultra-violet A, B and C radiation. This combination is designed to rapidly destroy germs and breakdown normal organic and carbon-based contaminants, purifying the air as it passes through. Since breakdown occurs so quickly, these filters require far less cleaning and provide optimal airflow.
